ACT Meters Ltd was formed in 1985 when managing director David Grant came up with the idea of combining a radio transmitter and multimeter to produce Checkmate, a meter which enabled remote circuit testing by one engineer. David then spent three years promoting the invention by offering a free troubleshooting service to alarm companies throughout the UK. Averaging a thousand miles per week, David quickly became experienced in identifying all manner of faults in troublesome systems. This knowledge gave him new ideas to develop false alarm management products for the security industry including battery testers, filters and suppressors.
